Has it been a month?

Sorry folks, but where has that time gone…? And it is not that I have been lazy it i more that I have never stood still.

Busy, busy time for the Silverdale and Arnside Art and Craft Trail, for which I am joint coordinator and this involves a fair bit of work…(possible understatement there!) This month i have shifted 95 promotional packs, one each to all our exhibitors, as well as catalogues to all our sales outlets and advertisers…getting on for 20,00 flyers, 1000 catalogues and 1000 posters…phew! It is a great event. Check out the link and come and visit. It is my top ‘gig’ of the year. I am exhibiting at home, Venue No. 13, together with my friends Angela Hargreaves  and Susan Fletcher.

And talking of shifting things; I have also moved a huge tropical fish tank in to my son Finn’s Imageroom, (thanks John!) Finn is thrilled to inherit “Dek the plec”, (who is quite enormous and very beautiful), and 3 little white catfish and 2 tetra’s. Check out ‘gobsmacked Finn’.

And even more “shifting” and perhaps THE most important, to me at least….i have just completed a 37 mile fell race. “Are you mad?” I hear you say. Yes, I have just ran the ‘Old County Tops Fell Race’.. a Lakeland classic! And, I have a very stunning hard-won t-shirt to prove it. You can only get the t-shirt if you complete the race – how cool is that. And to get it i just had to run up Helvellyn, Scafell and Coniston Old Man, oh and trot along in between them too. It was somewhat wet, (three saturdays ago) and a blinking long way, but thankfully I had an excellent partner, ‘Mike, King of the wet lap’, (he completed his own ‘Bob Graham Round in the wettest weather ever) who dragged me round and consumed vast quantities of flapjack and maltloaf en-route in the style of ‘The very Hungry Caterpillar’. A grand day out. I get a massive high just thinking about it, (ooh, and a twinge in my knee). ImageTalking of running, been working on my friends fell running commission, preparing boards….Image

Anyway, enough about me…what have I been shifting out of my shed……

My latest commission was a 64th birthday prezzie for an Exmoor pony saviour, keeper and fan. A wonderful project and I was under tough competition from the kids of Silverdale Primary too as they had recently completed a ceramic art project under the tutelage of the surprise recipient of my panel. You can see their artwork here and mine here….Image

Anyway, back to the bench in a big way now… only about 4 weeks to the Trail…. yikes!

Life’s a beach

Or it was today……

Been busy finishing off bits and bobs for my ‘open studio’ on Friday and the sun came out perfectly for these two pieces on the beach.Image

And most excitedly, today i got my new gate!

Roy Whiting of ‘The Greenwood Centre’, Silverdale, came to fit my gate and it is stunningly beautiful. So, I must insis,t that if you visit my shed on Friday then you must most definitely use the front gate!

Tilly

‘Tilly’ is my friends bouncy wire haired pointer. She is just gorgeous, with long legs and eyebrows to die for, (or perhaps not, unless you are of course, a wire haired pointer!…. Dogs and their owners and all that, I keep warning Gill).

Anyway tis the hubby’s birthday and Gill wanted Tilly immortalising in glass. So here she is in all her comical beauty. I worked from a close up photo of her face, tweaked the angle a bit to add to the comedy, angular framing and a driftwood base and job’s done. I used a variety of amber and streaky glasses to capture her colouring and enhanced it further by using silver leaf to pick out her hairs.

She was great fun……..makes you smile doesn’t she!

A lucky escape

Orrrrrr, isn’t he cute! We rescued this little bunny from my cat. He had him trapped in my downstairs loo but thankfully scampered off un-harmed…..
ImageJust back from a week in Cornwall and although beautiful, it could have been warmer. Stunning coast path cliff walks to hidden beaches and smugglers coves, so have come back refreshed and inspired and ready to go……

One of my next commissions will include wild exmoor ponies and I was lucky enough to see some on one of my cliff top runs.

And talking of running, must make a start on my ‘walshes’ panel.

Came back to the news that I have had one of my pieced accepted into the ‘Platform Gallery Craft Open’ so that will be a lovely day out.

Will let you know details closer to the time about this exhibition as it really is great to go and see.

And thanks to the person who left me the gift of driftwood at my back door! Some gorgeous pieces and made up for the fact that despite lots of beach-combing in Cornwall I came back with nowt! Thank you very much indeed….

Now, back to the bench!

A ‘weka’ in progress……

Whilst all around me are eating eggs……….Image

I am hatching a weka..

P1020240P1020241My customer is a rusty engineer, sorry, I meant to say ‘Rust Engineer’ and he was concerned about the legs. So far I’m using a nice bit of brass but I would advise against weka going paddling in any case…. oops, watch he doesn’t spill that tea!

A day of drawing…….(and re-drawing)

A blustery day and I’m feeling a chill so definitely not the day to be in the shed with that easterly wind whistling through. Far better a day at the kitchen table working on some designs.

My ‘weka’s and ‘walshes’ are taking shape.

‘Weka’ has been back to the drawing board a couple of times – very demanding customer. First weka was too casual! Image

“Put his back into it”, said Ray.

So rubber out and back to the board…. Waiting to hear the verdict on Mk 2, but I have threatened that the only way for me to improve on it now would be for Ray to pay for me to go to NZ and study said Weka in great detail.

Progress back at the Shed

Image

An itty –bitty week…..progressing commissions and finishing off bits and bobs.

My ‘nearly there hare’ is now a really there hare’ – Happy 40th Lu’.

Tilly the floppy dog in progress, I just love her comical expression. Just need to find the perfect bit of wood as a base, add a bit of silver leaf and then she is ready to be the surprise birthday present that she was commissioned for.

And the ‘patchwork heart’ was collected today for a birthday on Wednesday.

Ooh, I’m going to miss all these pretty little colourful panels.Image

Happy Birthday Wales

A recent commission from a friend…..it went something like this.

“My brother-in-law is having a birthday… it’s a special birthday…..i need a special present for him… and I need to take it with me to America – a week on Saturday…..Oh, and he’s Welsh…I’d like dragons and mountains please…”

And here are the results.Image

Good job I like working under pressure… and good job one of my son’s favourite childhood stories was ‘George and the Dragon’. So, I had my dragon image, now I just needed a setting. Isn’t google marvellous, a few clicks of the keyboard and I was immersed in Welsh myth and legend.

Basically in he beginning there were two serpents, a red (welsh)and a white (saxon), they fought and the red serpent triumphed. The white serpent slunk off into the pond defeated and the red serpent entered Merlin’s tent to the re-emerge as the might red scaly beast that we now know as the magnificent Welsh dragon. Obviously there was way more to it than that but my friend warned me not to get too caught up in the imagery….we were on a tight schedule after all.

Image

Anyway, deadlines were met and I am really pleased with the results. The silver leaf on the dragon works well to pick out his features and the mountains conjure up dramatic welsh scenery. I even added a wee silvery pond in the valley bottom and Merlin’s cave in the mountains.

Great fun. Happy Birthday Wales.
