Scorchio Summer!

Hello there, just back from a scorchio break in the mountains of the Costa Blanca….P1030420so that must be what explains my in-activity??!!
In-activity? – no way! Even though the beach-combing wasn’t up to the standard I am used to in Pembrokeshire I still managed to salvage one ot two intersting bits….P1030493P1030495these wooly balls provided a relaxing activity to do in the shade and a break from my otherwise constant search for water to dive in to. (Finn enjoyed juggling with them too!)P1030481
And because I have been in scorchio Spain I haven’t got any new things to show you…….. so I thought I should show you my ‘hot pink’ work that I exhibited at the Art Trail back in June. (I saw flamingo’s in the salt flats at Calpe – not quite as pink as mine!! – not enough shrimp perhaps??!!))P1030309P1030312P1030314
This wee pink Quirky Bird can be seen in the Green Door ‘Summer Exhibition’ at Farfield Mill, Sedbergh.P1030310
The painted ‘Houses on the Quay’ will be heading overseas soon. (Will definitley be making more of these…..it is so satisfying scratching away at the paint.)
But it is now back to the drawing board for me, designing up my next couple of commissions…a sylvan scene and a country farmyard with more belted-galloways and perhaps even a saddleback pig! (Should be interesting).
Just ever so slightly distracted by my newest house visitor though…my sisters 9 month old springer spaniel, Pepper!

Frolic’ing Frith!

Here is how it started…..

(Pamela)
“Hi Debbie,
My mom recently had one of your lovely robins bought her for Christmas…….”

“….Thank you for your email. I have a lovely border collie called Frith. I looked at your gallery and love the one you have done of Tilly and how it is framed in driftwood in such an original way. I have a special birthday this month and would love something similar with maybe a swallow incorporated?…”

“…Frith is quite a character and I love all garden birds but when the swallows return to us in Spring it’s always been a special moment”
P1030053

(Debbie)
I am probably shying away from the traditional pet portrait tableau and am thinking more of creating a picture. How would you feel about Frith running across the skyline, strong black and white silhouette, perhaps a tree, and the swallows swirling around in the sky?

“P.S. Any chance snowdrops could be in there somewhere or am I asking the impossible.”

(Nothing is impossible!!)

P1020909

“Absolutely love the draft sketch you emailed. The whole idea is spot on. It incorporates everything we wanted and more…..
I was like a little child when I saw your email as wasn’t expecting anything until next week.”

…Just realised, am applying a bit of nature’s license as swallows don’t tend to be around when the snowdrops are out!!……..I’m happy if you are.
P1030052

“I’m fine with that!! It will make it a bit unique.”

Well, here goes then.
….. Frith and the swallows.

Happy Birthday Pamela!

The Trails of Life….

Or did I mean Trials?

Serious ups and downs over the last couple of weeks.

As coordinator of the SAACT I was sweating it for a whole week on delivery of this years very special catalogue, eagerly jumping out in front of delivery vans coming down my street for what seemed like days and days….But then they arrived! (“Hallelujah”I cried.) P1030150And all was ‘up’ as I toured the county delivering them to our outlets.

So on the ‘up’ I went to visit Peter my pal with the kiln to get my latest glass fired pieces and then came the ‘down’. My beloved curlews had over-fired and what had been stunningly beautiful EAG streaky glass was reduced to murky opaque brown….Serious downer. Hours and hours and days of work reduced to nothing!

The following morning and washing all my other pieces, things were looking better. Foiling and joining on the Saturday produced a wee street of painted ‘Wee House’s on the Hill’. (Slowly going back up).P1030116P1030115

But from every great down comes a great ‘up’. Inspired by failure I came up with a design for a panel. It would incorporate cute wee painted sections and my favourite shot-blasting. (I miss those guys on the shop-floor!)

Designed around my Brothers house, I drew up ‘School House Farm’.

Ed at the shot-blasters informed me that the font I had chosen was really just a little bit illegal, it being the font used in the Wainwright Guides, (but that’s meant to be a secret, ssssssshhhh!!) So that put me on a definite upper. You can’t beat being just a bit naughty to put you in a good mood, can you?

Had a blast once again on their machine and tried carving out a sandpiper – (neeeeeearly worked).

P1030145 P1030146And my newly developed delicate touch produced no holes in any case on the text sections.

I have experimented again with my painting technique, laying down a mat of umber and painting black line over the top. (No room for mistakes with this one!) You can see my work in progress here but if you want to see the finished panel you are going to have to come along on the Trail.P1030138

And yeah, I’ve had other downers cos I am working so blinking hard at the moment. But, outweighed by the ‘upper’ of trotting over Hutton Roof last night with my running pals and sharing a pint after and not caring about my achy knees.

Yeah, life is good. And I haven’t minded at all getting grubby grouting today.

See you all soon at my best ‘gig’* of the year…but a few more late nights to be had first though.P1030151

*Best gig = Venue 13, The Silverdale and Arnside Art and Craft Trail. (Look out for the bunting!)

…through rose tinted glasses.

What a delightful way to view the world…P1030093

I have once again succumbed to the beauty of EAG handmade glassP1030090 and now it has arrived I don’t know quite what to do with it.

P1030089It is like a big giant pink sweetie…absolutely good enough to eat!

Pink “falamingos” (as Finn calls them!) have sprung to mind and I have been enjoying watching their beautiful courtship dance on You Tube. Very inspiring shapes and forms but not quite brave enough to commit to cutting just yet………….P1030087

Any suggestions most welcome….

Milestone Trail

This year The Silverdale and Arnside Art and Craft Trail celebrates its 10th Anniversary. Silverdale Art Trail-advert2014

It all started back in 2005 with just seven exhibitors and a hand-drawn purple map…..By 2009 there were 35 exhibitors and Annette Kane the then coordinator said, “we had a feeling that it would grow”.

It is now 2014 and I am going to be just one of 107 exhibitors. (It certainly did grow!)

I shall be exhibiting at my home, Venue Number 13, along with Angela Hargreaves, my painter friend and Peter McNaught my stained glass pal. It would be great if you could come along for a visit.

For the latest details check out the Art Trail website

Otterly Natural

ImageMy latest commission has been this gentle tableau of otters cavorting in and out of the river. I was originally going to tackle this project with glass appliqué but the detail of the painted pieces of glass combined with the strong lead lines have worked out even better! I am really pleased with the natural colour palette and painting too and, as my eldest son said, (yes, he noticed!!!), “You are drawn in to look more closely at it, Mum”.

So take a closer look yourself……..

The swimming otter I traced from an artwork found on google.Image I did at first mix up some brown paint but I was worried it would fire too pale so I mixed in some black too. After firing it the first time I then added some further shading with a matting layer and fired again. You can see the shading a little better on the Otter on the tree roots.Image

For the undergrowth I applied a matte of paint and allowed it to dry and then freehand scraped it away in leafy-ferny patterns. Very relaxing and enjoyable. I could do more of this!

Above are what the otters looked like after the first firing.
