The Beach at Beer. (Make mine a pint.)

And full to the brim!

This latest project left me ‘brimming over’; I have so enjoyed it.

Tom came to me with his ideas and requests back in July – he wanted to commission something really special for his Dad’s 65th Birthday.

Now it was obvious that Tom loves this beach and that it also held a firmly fixed visual feel in his minds eye too. He provided lots of lovely images and had even trawled the beach collecting ‘goodies and treasures’ with his family.

Oh how was I to translate all this into a workable feast for his eyes? (Oh and did I tell you that his sister,  from whom the gift would also be, was an artist! – so no pressure.)

Thankfully I had the summer and my own beach holiday to mull things over. And youtube of course; a fantastic reference source to fill in the ‘gaps’ in the images. (I have now flown over Beer numerous times in a small DJI Phantom and swum with dolphins there too).

I drew up the design and hung it on the door and left it there. I usually find this works well. It hung there for a while and I kept rubbing out and adjusting lines.

Then the kids went back to school….. Oh dear, I was going to have to commit.

I procrastinated over colour palette for a few days then bit the bullet. Glass was ordered, delivered and it was time to start cutting.

Tom and Gemma liked the hotch-potch way I had put together sea-side scenes in the past and Gemma particularly liked my applique techniques. I decided this would work and I would combine it with paint to add the detail.P1040999

I had great fun trying out new techniques for the beach and cliffs…splattering finely with a bristle brush and smudging the wet layers.

I jiggled about with the beach huts making many extras to get the flow of colours just right.P1050183

P1040996

The free-standing boats in the foreground, numbered up to suit family member initials, add depth and alter the scene when viewed from different angles. Fun was had constructing the wee wire jetty.

The Fishing Trip sign was made from a piece of Tom’s flottsam. (Incidentally he liked the way I had misspelt ‘mackeral’ in the same way that the Beer locals also do – lucky that, as I hadn’t actually realized I had it wrong! (Or ‘right’ as in this case!!))

P1050169 (1) P1050177P1050171

I have enjoyed making this piece so much I almost didn’t want to finish it.

But, with a cracking day to photograph it down on the shore at Silverdale, ‘tis done and Tom and his family are now enjoying it before delivering it to his Dad – PWB 65.

An International Wedding Present

A Lancashire lass was marrying a Canadian in Hong Kong and the piece was to be transported in a suitcase….oh and it was needed within the month!

Ummmm, something to get the old grey matter churning…..and quick.

So I hit google images and when spotting an old Lancashire battalion piece of memorabilia I had a lightbulb moment of “A Hybrid!”….”Yes, yes a plant that blooms with roses and its leaves will be that of the maple…….created from love so entwined with hearts….YES, yes, a truly new original…..genius!”

Georgina, (the customer) was hesitant but trusted me. So happy with the strong images and shapes I had found I begun constructing the elements.

P1050059

And then the new hybrid met Susan! (Anyone Looking for Susan??)

“She wants that!” she exclaimed, “But it reminds me of those nodding plants from Blackpool”. (Susan is nothing if not honest – haha)

So a deflated me went back to the drawing board and head scratching…..

See, my problem from the outset had been that I was rebelling against the traditional when faced with the very traditional imagery…… (sometimes I am my own worst enemy – trying so very hard to be different)

Now, with the elements before me in their beautiful shades and natural shapes…….the simple and pretty end result presented itself.

P1050080P1050083P1050181

So off it goes to Hong Kong and beyond, happy customers, happy couple, happy me and another lesson learnt…(both in design and construction!)

….As did you notice my new technique of engraving…. Wow , thanks to the generous and knowledgable Barbara Winkfield in the village and the loan of her kit.P1050063P1050134

P1050136

I used flasehd glass to make the Lancashire Rose, (which basically means I was able to remove the top red flash of glass using Barbara’s engraving tool to expose the clear glass beneath). Simples!!.? (Yeah right. I have a long way to go. Methinks Barbara might get sick of the sight of me.) Next on my wanted list could well be a wee dremell……..and ear plugs to accompany of course!

Isn’t glass an amazing material……….the possibilities really are endless.

A return to the Oystercatcher

Wire has caught my attention and paint has completely grabbed it!

P1040357I have returned to my favourite and original bird, the oystercatcher. But time has moved on and I have progressed and this time I have used paint to capture its markings. I built up layer upon layer of paint (with my fingers-crossed) in the hopes that the bird wouldn’t look too flat and although I wasn’t happy with my first firing I am totally happy with the finished piece now. (I applied an extra even layer of paint and refired). The bold black and white markings with the clear red beak now look just right.

But I wanted to take my favourite bird one step further again.

I wanted to create a piece that would capture how I see them now out on the bay. Moving around and feeding as one big happy group.

So after recently attending two wire courses and investing quite heavily in some rather gorgeous new materials I decided to set upon making wire silhouettes. The silhouettes would hopefully add movenment and depth of field.P1040578P1040580P1040582P1040583

And oh how I love bending this wire! I have worked with willow in the past making baskets and sculptures and in comparison wire is just so damn biddable. (Obviously you can’t beat the smell of willow and it would still feature in my list of top 5 favourite materials…but wire….ooooh-ooooh, I am loving this wire).

I appear to like bending things to my will. (Ummmmm, what does that say about me!?)

P1040684

And then the most perfect piece of wood to mount my birds on. I just love this chunk of composite wood. The layers that have been built by man, with a patina that has been added by the sea. (And just the occasional stripe of red – pure genius).

Flipping gorgeous. I hope you like it as much as I do.

Raised a few eyebrows when i walked down the beach with this earlier!

It’s all about the lovely people that you meet

Yes, one of the greatest things about my job is the lovely people you get to meet! They wander into my studio to view and appraise, sometimes purchase and sometimes commission. I love the chat. Their stories are fantastic and the commissions I get are second to none.

Lynne walked into my shed a couple of months ago after Peter, my old tutor, had pointed her in my direction. Turns out Lynne is one very special lady. She is one of those individuals that moves people; inspires people….leaves an impression on you. She’s extraordinary.

P1040657

Lynne is making a commemorative panel for a friend of hers and she wanted a little help from me with some painted sections that would form a centre-piece. They would be circular in shape and should include the motifs of a Robin and Bluebells and, a Hummingbird and Daffodil.

I came up with some nice compositions then built up the images using layers of vitreous paint on pale green cathedral glass. P1040343P1040365The pieces were fired  and then came the tricky bit….adding colour using enamels. My experience is this department was slim and I was worried about spoiling what I had already created. But I stuck to the manual and tested and tested and tested.P1040611P1040610

(Oh and i realised the importance of testing!…….peely-custard or what!!)

P1040642

Once I was happy, and Lynne too, I set to adding the final touches – a brush of colour here and there and w-hey, they worked!

P1040649P1040650P1040652P1040651

See what I mean, she’s an inspiration.

Jonah and the Whale

This is Steve the Gardener’s favourite story and I owed it to him to capture it in glass.

(Steve chops up all my firewood for me – he is a very good man).

We chatted….and I drew. (Steve was quite particular about the details and was sure of the part of the story he wanted me to portray).

P1040372P1040375

I selected some lovely special bits of handmade glass. My aim was to keep the glass shapes simple and let the painting tell the story….. I loved doing this story-telling by painting.

P1040530P1040379

Pop it in the kiln – oooooh, just fits!

A bit of ‘forging’ to make the curlicue waves……..

P1040427P1040626

And then finish it off with a bit of wood collected from the bottom of the sea!

Debbie’s Shed goes global

Yes, just take a glance across to the right of your screen….can you see my new ‘widget’!?!

Yes, Debbie’s Shed is now on Etsy – the worldwide marketplace for arts and crafts. If you pick the image you will be taken to my shop…….but don’t go just yet, let me tell you what’s been happening.

I figured that now I have my own kiln I could make an endless supply of wee dangly items and I so love making my wee birds why shouldn’t I share them with the world. Everyone of them is different……I set out with  a lose plan in my head but really I am just doodling on the birds and making it up as I go – enjoying the whole mark-making bit.

And then for a bit of variety in my shop I have selected one or two other small items that too, are easy to post. Following a photo shoot in the garden, (this sunny weather is fab!) I spent a few hours loading up the files and there you have it….and I am delighted to have already had my first sale – yippee!

Debbie’s Shed is now set to take over the world! (Or at least brighten up one or two windows!)P1040140

Where sticks come to die

P1040190
What a start to my bucket list!
Up until about a week ago I didn’t know that “this” would be on my bucket list…….(well really, I didn’t even have a bucket list). ……But flipping heck, now it should be everyone’s bucket list.
What am I talking about?

P1040213
Driving a tractor of course! Yes, a huge, big flaming red Massey Ferguson.
It is/was majestic.
I’d like to say it handled like a dream but I’d be lying. I was shook around like a sack of spuds but I tell you what, you can point it at almost anything. And my mate John made me!
I had my maiden voyage last Thursday when John launched me at the shoreline….”But……but…..” stuttered I. John was having none of it.

P1040208

“Shuttup woman and get behind that wheel.”

P1040209

So I was off. Negotiating bridges and gullies on the bank of the River Kent like I was born to it. (A friend said to me, “yes, I can imagine you driving a tractor”….Ummmmm, not sure what that says about me? But hey-ho).

About seven tonnes of driftwood we collected that day, and same again yesterday. That is a lot of wood. First we had to drag it and chop it and then hurl it into the trailer. John scoffed at my accuracy getting close to the piles of wood at first….”You’ll learn”, he said.

P1040210

I often get asked where I find all my driftwood on which to mount my birds and animals. “Oh I just pick up the odd bit here and there,” I casually answer.

If they could see me now!

P1040217P1040218P1040221

And the reward at the end…..flask and a flapjack with the best view ever and Milly cleaning up the crumbs.

P1040223P1040222

Oh and the best thing about collecting wood (besides getting to drive the tractor!)…….

Makes you sleep like a log!! (ha-ha-ha….sorry!!) zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

A belting Panel

It was Open Shed day way back in May….and the day had already got off to a good start. The Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal had just phoned me to say I was one of the lucky reserves (i.e.. I answered the phone!!) to get tickets from the waiting list for ‘The (beautiful) South’ performing that very night.

And then Liz turned up with a most wonderful commission under her arm! (We had first met at Rheged when she admired my work there and now here she was again, all the way from Dumfries!)

She also thought she was having a good day as that very morning she had viewed my blog to find my latest post featuring her beloved Belted Galloways!

And so the connection was forged.P1030657

From a wee bundle of photos and a couple of dimensions, I later set to drafting up Liz’s panel. The brief was it had to include Liz’s new farmhouse and a belted galloway.P1030852

We to-d and fro-d for a bit and soon a couple of saddle-back pigs were to join the scene. Some time was spent getting the layout just right and selecting the glass colours and then with sizes finalised I started cutting.

P1030952Simple shapes were to be enhanced with painted detail.

The vitreous paint was built up in many layers to create depth, intensity and detail.P1030853

P1030862

Then it was fired…….leaded…..soldered…..grouted and polished.P1030895P1030951

P1030896Liz came down to collect it last Saturday and I hope to hear soon that she has successfully fitted it above her new front door.

Yes, a truly belting project….enjoyed from start to finish!

Awakening

Green Door Artists, of which I am a member, are hosting a show at The Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal, titled ‘Awakening’.

P1030968 P1030978 I was very excited and stimulated by this title particularly when I had just located some spectacular pieces of fallen wood.

Using hollowed out/rotten timber I was inspired to create a wee sleepy mouse and an even dozier Rabbit! The idea being, wee sleepy animal in the ‘burrow’ and the ‘awakening sibling up top…but I know you don’t need me to explain all that, it is very plain to see!

I loved making these and the amber glass just works brilliantly. The animal in the ‘hole’ just glows in the right light and looks sooooo cosy.

P1030947

P1030946

P1030964I had fun making more wired bindweed too…amazingly durable stuff and just adds that little bit extra.

Here’s the build up..P1030910.. painting………assembling..P1030924……sanding………finishing…..P1030911P1030912

….And exhibiting! Yes, they are now in place at the Brewery.

The Preview is on Saturday 24th January from 4pm-6pm and there will be tea and cakes, yum-yum. The show stays in place until the 4th March.
