Preening, posturing and prepping…

So I have had this idea in my head to capture birds in flight and with the Trail fast approaching I figured it a good plan to make a drop dead gorgeous panel for then. I pictured them, (the birds), silhouetted against the sky in the upper part of my window. So, I drafted something up and gazed at it for a few days….I coloured it in….i selected my colours and finally bit the bullet and invested ‘dosh’ in some new sheets of glass.

P1060381

On arrival of glass I worried that the blue sheet would not be quite big enough for my needs…oh dear, cold feet.(Nervous I am. This would be the largest panel I have tackled so far…and it would require a whole new board to be fitted on my bench..yikes)

I looked at the drawing a bit longer and instead decided upon making two smaller panels. One capturing the birds in flight and the other catching them preening. (Back to the drawing board)

P1060419

Yip-yippee…next it was down to cutting glass  Oh, how I love to cut glass…. And, I got to try out the nifty new trick that I had learnt from Deb’s at Pendle Stained Glass. Check me out using a sheet of plain glass as an easel and sticking the bits of cut glass to it using plasticine. Great way to check colours and composition.. (just need to remember not to leave it propped in the sun though as everything travels south in the heat!)

Next the painting. I decided I was going to paint every piece of glass to achieve a level of obscurity in each section. The blue sky was just given a light even matt but I had a bit of fun on the other panel…

Splattering it with water for nice effect! (’twas subtle, but nice)

After firing I realised I had made a couple of wrong colour decisions as the darkest amber darkened just a bit too much in the kiln so I ended up re-firing a couple of pieces. But happy that I did.

Then, lead work followed by that filthy job of grouting! (I used a brush, David, at Pendle Stained Glass..although did still manage to get quite grubby..no hope).

Then after much polishing, the reveal….. what do you think?

P1060502

P1060504

So glad i decided to make the two. i just love this preening couple.

Why not come and see them at the Trail this weekend…

(Just also like to say thanks to all the staff at Pendle Stained Glass who were most patient and generous on my day out there…hopefully be back again at some point)

Bring me sunshine….

Just a few short weeks ago an offer dropped in to my ‘inbox’.

Would I like to submit artwork for an exhibition to celebrate what would have been Eric Morecambe’s 90th year? This came from The Morecambe Artist Colony (MAC), a dynamic wee group of artists and makers from, yes you’ve guessed it – Morecambe!

P1060192

Well it lit a spark in me – the Eric Morecambe statue never fails to illicit a response whenever I pass it….a smile…a salute…or the full on one-legged dance – yee-hah!

P1060338

(I spent a very happy lunch-time once with my Mam and Dad at ‘Eric’s Cafe’ which is just across the road from Eric’ statue. The laugh we had watching passing folks strike a pose…Eric definitely “brings me sunshine!”)

P1060327

So here is what I came up with for my submission…even the birds getting in on the act!

P1060321

You can see that Eric also brought me sunshine whilst i was photographing my artwork. …He also brought a high tide though and me, out on the sands at Silverdale, trying to capture Eric and co’ against a bright wide horizon and big sky; I almost got caught by the ‘bore’ (and I am not referring to a particularly un-interesting local character!!)

P1060315

The ‘bore’ is the first wave of each tide and in the estuary at Silverdale you can spot it twice daily if you’re watching. It is quite a sight. Most usually it is a gentle shallow little wave. First filling up all the riverlets but quickly following up with gobbling up all the sand. On particularly high tides it comes in especially quickly and will have a white wake behind it. (I have spotted the bore from the top of the Knott before – a line of water creeping up the Bay).

P1060314

So yesterday was one of those high tides. It was also very sunny so I was out on the sand-bar photographing Eric. Happy days…. Till I heard a toot-toot from Tony on the shore. Lucky for me I heeded his warning and headed back; just managing to skip across the ever widening stream and onto the land. Phew! What a numpty.

P1060331

Lucky for me Tony was there…another couple of minutes and I wouldn’t have fancied my chances surfing in…..Silly me. And me a local too. (Lesson to self – always always check the tides)

P1060345

If you would like to take a look at the exhibition then pop across to Morecambe Library. The exhibition is on until the middle of July.

P1060350

(Can you spot the real statue!!??)

All mapped out…..

The Island of Anglesea was to be captured in glass for a celebratory birthday.

P1050914

Glass applique technique was best suited for the construction method to avoid the whole piece getting heavy with lead and solder, as it was quite dainty really, measuring just a little bigger than a sheet of A4.

P1050918

Janine and her lovely Mum and Dad had lots of great ideas about what should be included and the main priority was the holiday home named ‘Minfordd’ and the Menai Straits and boats as the recipient loves sailing.P1050913

P1050852

Details were painted using vitreous fired mixture of tracing black and antique brown paint and the best bit was hunting out all the interesting little nooks and crannies that Anglesea has to offer.

P1050916

A lovely wee project that is now in place at ‘Minfordd’

So what is ‘Open Shed’..?

And what is an ‘Art Trail’? ………some folks ask!

It is so easy to forget that not everyone knows what I’m on about.

Okay. So, ‘Open Shed’….(or ‘Open Studio’ as I call it when I’m talking to posh folk)….is when I tidy up my workshop, sweep up the glass grinds, stack neatly the driftwood, de-clog the sink and scrub up the loo……Then throw open the doors to welcome you.

P1050142

I usually try to make things look nice. I line up the shoes at the back door, arrange nicely my birds, trinkets and danglies, sweep the mat and stick out the ‘welcome’ board.

If I’m lucky some nice interested folks come wandering in and engage me in engaging chatter. If I’m very lucky one of them folks might want to commission me to make something special for them or even purchase one of my wee danglies. (But it is OK to just come along for the look-see and the patter)

P1050901

You will usually (!!) find me working hard at my bench on stock items or my latest commission. I am always happy to explain what I am up to; I have even been known to pop the kettle on. There are lots of interesting things for you to look at and poke about in……in fact, I can highly recommend you pay me a visit.

I do ‘Open Shed’ always (well nearly always) on the last Friday of each month. (But you come visit at any time really…….just give me a shout!)

P1050354

So what is an ‘Art Trail’? An Art Trail is a group of studio’s or workshops or galleries that get together to host an ‘event’ and they all throw open their doors to the adoring public. The studios are usually quite close together and there is often a map or instructions of how to trip from one studio to the next.

Art Trails are great fun. You get to meet artists and makers at home and comfortable in their natural working environment. You get to poke around in their studios and can get to commission or purchase artwork direct from the maker.

If you are a lover of art and craft or like meeting interesting people then art trails and open studio’s are just brilliant.

P1050385

I participate in two Art Trails and I love doing them. I really enjoy meeting people and it is a great way to showcase your work. Without Art Trails I don’t think I would be able to do what I do, (meaning, be self employed in a great wee shed in a fabidozi location). Most of my sales and commissions come as a direct result of my taking part in an Art Trail.

I am busy right now preparing work for the Green Door Art Trail that takes place from the 9th -11th April. This trail encompasses quite a large chunk of the south lakes and I am part of a Silverdale group exhibition at the local Methodist Church. Seven of us will transform the Church Hall into a pop-up gallery space and have lots of fun welcoming you to come take a peek.

art-trail-cover-2016-thm-231x320.jpgMy main event of the year is the Silverdale and Arnside Art and Craft Trail and for the past five years I have been one of the main organisers. This always takes place on the last weekend in June and it is truly FANTASTIC.

trail catalogue dummy.jpg

Our wee village comes alive with a carnival of thronging crowds clutching art trail maps, tumbling from one exhibition venue to the next. The atmosphere is buzzing and it is by far the busiest event in the village calendar.

If you come you will be wooed by over 80 artists at 30 different venues.

You will swoon over the artwork on offer and be stimulated to maybe ‘have a go’ at a workshop….or maybe make a purchase and take home lots of lovely goodies.

Without doubt, you will enjoy yourself though. I promise.

Remember, the last weekend in June………….diary it!

So now you know what I’m on about why not take a look in my events to find out where I am next exhibiting or when my next ‘open studio’ is.

For hot off the press news take a look at my facebook page where I post regularly about what I am working on.

Thanks for reading and I look forward to welcoming you at Debbie’s Shed sometime soon.

The Sandpiper

P1050719

small custodians of the bay

seers of the mudflats

sharp tailed birds

sort of same

but not same

linearly facing

complicated glassy gusts

static

but not

not quite

P1050798 (1)

A friend wrote those words in response to pictures I sent……………Lovely. Not much more I need to say really……..

Well. I guess I can explain how I came to make them….

First efforts were made using an opalescent streaky glass I favoured at the time…

Preening curlew and Sandpiper

I next had a go with sand-blasting on a scrap of expensive hand-made glass. Beautiful but, sadly, weak.

P1030142

P1030141

But now, ha-ha, I have my kiln. (How did I manage without it?)

So, I love how these birds flock on the bay. Scurrying along the waters edge…rapidly reversing when a wave breaks. Quite comical really. And then all huddled together in that beautiful roosting pose. And when they’re in flight, well that is another story again. Wonderful sweeping waves and patterns ……(big head-scratch to capture that bit…….but I will. ………..)

I looked at lots of images and footage on youtube……….

P1050724

I decided to go with two strong outlines on a white whispy glass and paint on the markings using layers of black and brown paints. Experimental – but hey, I’m game.

Then the grubby bits of leading and grouting and endless polishing….

Now I just need to find some stonking bits of wood on which I can mount a flock.

I’d quite like to incorporate a bit of wiring too…

But in the meantime………..just quite beautiful.

Hey Mickey you’re so fine….

Okay. So make a Mickey. Should be easy should it not? An absolutely lovely customer and an image to copy off! But hey, Mike (who it is for), is a real serious Disney addict and an engineer to boot.

Gotta get this just right with maybe just a bit of rock n roll cos he really adores Mickey. I fancied a spotlight… thought it might work in the whole composition thing…..P1050479

So firstly…get Mickey to the correct scale….sort out where my cut lines will be…..select the right glass….and paint away.

P1050467Yep, first layer and looking good. Some serious smudging done on the second layer, but recovered and added to the vintage look. (This is a Vintage 1951 Mickey I am talking!) And pop it into the kiln. Going good style.P1050468 (1)

Next up, flip Mickey over and add colour to his shorts, his boots and his tongue, then back into the kiln….slightly lower the temp as we are talking enamels now.

So kiln on, stinky fumes, get outta the shed and settle down for a brew. Oh, and my favourite mag‘ has arrived – perfect!

Time ticked by ….and oh darnit………DARN-IT!!!!!! I have only gone and overcooked Mickey…..by about 40 minutes!

Idiot….Idiot….Idiot….Idiot……….(This day I did a lot of rhyming with the word ‘book’).P1050547

Mickey emerged looking slightly more vintage than I had hoped. Many tell me they liked the effect….…but me, well, lets have another go.

So cut out Mickey No. 2 and whilst waiting for paint to dry thought I might as well solder up No. 1 as a prototype. Popped him into the light box I had sourced to make him a bit more rock ’n’ roll and OMG he was only toooo darn tall.

A classic draughtsman’s error. I couldn’t believe it. What with my background in launching ships and all that!! – (er, slight exaggeration….but I was a mech’draffie of old and had shared tales with Mike – he would be aghast). The error had arisen from the flexibility of my cardboard model. That slight curvature was unforgivable when constructed in rigid glass. Idiot. Idiot. Idiot.

So. Mickey No.1 was over-cooked…and now Mickey No.2 was bumping his head on my light box. (You can see where this is going can’t you.)

P1050481By now I am blinking great at making Mickey’s! That second layer of paint….got it down to a fine art. Hey, if you can’t learn by your mistakes when can you learn….P1050484

And hey, Mickey number three was just right.

P1050516

Okay. Assembly now. Lets try him in the box. By now I am starting to love Mickey quite a lot myself, and do you know what, I found I wasn’t too keen on him hiding in the box. After covert consultations with Mike’s wife Linda we decided that Mickey looked finest on a chip off the old block.

So drum roll please……Here we have him. Mickey, Vintage 1951.

P1050543

Loved every minute of it. Merry Christmas Mike and Linda x

(Oh, and the magazine…….Fellrunner, Winter edition……….. There is no hope for me…..I like to run up the side of a mountain…x )

Delights of Damson Cottage

photo-4 (1)

What a beautiful cottage!  …..and the image I had to capture for a Ladies special Birthday.

First up I visited the second hand shops in search of some chintzy pottery to imitate the blooming rose. Then drafted up a line drawing of the building for my cutting template. I decided upon copper foiling as my construction method with details to be added in paint.

I wanted to capture all the light and shade in the picture so applied the paint in layers. You can see it building up in the images…..

P1050499

For some of the subtle detail I worked while the paint was still wet to create softer edges.P1050502

Scratched in the detail…then more paint applied in thinner layers…careful not to smudge what has been laid down.

P1050504

Once happy, it was into the kiln.

Then the jigsawing of putting it all together…lots of lovely solder.P1050522

A lovely bit of wood selected and job done. Pretty as a picture!P1050523P1050525

Desperate after Desmond

The north west has just been battered by some of the worst rain storms in history. Roads are mangled, bridges are buckled and hundreds and thousands of people are flooded out of the their homes.

We are lucky here in Silverdale. We escaped pretty unscathed and even maintain our power.

I was witness to some of the damage though. …Washed out at the Hawkshead Christmas Fair at the weekend, the Saturday evening saw us virtually swimming through huge puddles in my trusty red berlingo submarine to return home. It was only on our return on the Sunday in Ju’s truck that we realized the full extent of the flooding. Many roads were shut and we had to perform one or two slightly irregular manouvres to keep us on the right road. The Lyth Valley was awash. Poor homes with water up to the window sills……woodpiles, deck-chairs and garden toys floating across the A590 where there should not be a high water mark.

Such sad scenes.

There was angry water at Newby Bridge and boats in odd locations. But we made it back to Hawkshead. The sun came out rather weirdly and locals ventured out to do the annual carol sing and parade.

What an horrendous weekend. As I said on facebook, ‘twould be nice to see friendly faces coming to say ‘hi’ to cheer us up but no-one, no-one should try. What a relief to get home but horrible to see the devastation left behind.

Our house in Scotland flooded 10 years ago so I know what it feels like and I really want to do something to help.

So this is just to let you know, ‘Debbie’s Shed is open for business and that I intend to donate 50% of all my sales between now and Christmas to a local flood charity. Just drop by. I am working hard fulfilling my Christmas orders at the mo’ so am usually in and have lots of other bits and bobs for sale.

Please come along, shop local and handmade and help me do my bit for the flood victims.

All the best folks, Debbie

Eddie

P1050375Eddie is the cutest black scribble of a dog that you ever could meet. So when Sue asked me to make panel for Sal, (her sister and my oldest bestest pal), well……

Eddie is a will o’ the wisp ….he’s a black floppy flash ….he’s cocky and cute and crazy…..…….and he can’t fail to raise a smile. So it was clear to me from the start; the only way to capture the essence of Eddie would be in cartoon strip.P1050376

With National Poetry day upon us I set Sue the challenge of writing a wee poem which I could then illustrate. (I’d have had a go myself but what I’ve failed to mentioned so far is that Eddie is also the randiest little dog that I ever did meet (see post ‘When Pepper met Eddie, August 2014….stomach muscles still protest now!!) And so, bearing in mind the image that springs to my mind when I think of Eddie – then my poem would have been x-rated!)

P1050273So with images lifted from Sal’s facebook page and a copy of ‘Hairy Maclairy’ I set to. Sue’s poem was edited to 6 lines. (She had got quite carried away and I had to remind her this wasn’t a Cathedral window we were creating!!) And I drew up the draft; a simple 3-piece panel with painted detail.

I hoped to achieve it all in one firing so my layers had to be carefully worked out. The trickiest thing about the layers is making sure you don’t destroy what you have laid down before…but I planned well (good girl scout) and it all worked out, phew!P1050262P1050268P1050279

My sisters had a sneaky squint at it them when they visited and Heidi suggested the addition of Eddie’ name to be included so I tweaked a bit and ‘Eddie’ was added. (Heidi would like to take full credit for this important detail, which she thinks, would be very important to Sal!)P1050377

Once fired and with the pieces perched in my window I also made the decision to keep the three panels separate so that Sal could dot them around or assemble as she wished. To me they seemed to work well as individual panels and Sal, like me, likes stuff dotted about.

P1050371 P1050372

And now she has it – and she tells me she is thrilled.

P1050368

Well they make you smile. Just like Eddie x
