Alpine conditions

Image“Alpine conditions”, yes, that’s what the weatherman says. And it is truly gorgeous. Just look at that dusting of frost on my recently gathered haul of driftwood….(just to prove I get up early to go to my shed….. by 9:30 it had all melted!)

Spent the day cut-cut-cut-cut-cutting in preparation for my work day at the kitchen table with friend Susan again tomorrow, and of course the very cute Alfred. (Better get some biscuits in).Image

Can you guess what I am going to make next for my ‘mad march hare’ day?

(Or should that be ‘mad march HAIR day’!!??) It’s a tricky one, you are just going to have to watch this space.Image

Had a great surprise email from my old stained glass tutor yesterday. Apparently I am a “Dallam success story!” And in order to give them some publicity, and me some free publicity, she is going to do a small feature on me in the next issue of the ‘Dallam Firstclass’ newsletter. Check out the link to their website…http://www.dallam.eu/meet-exdallam-debbie-glassmaker-extraordinaire/4526.html

My son Tom is mortified. His Mum is going to be in his school newsletter!

I am having great fun winding him up saying that they have asked me to go in and do an assembly. They haven’t of course, but he deserves it. This is the same boy who says that his Mum is un-employed (as opposed to self employed), and sometimes even describes me as ‘retired’! I mean, do I look retired, pottering away in my shed with radio 4 on ………….Image

Winter sunshine

Oh, I love it when the sun comes out….. Got out for a little run this morning along the cliff path to Arnside. The tide was quietly lapping in and tickling the cliffs and there on a sandbank waded a “squadron” (not sure of the correct collective noun here, but suits perfectly to me when thinking of them flying in perfect formation), of oystercatchers. Oystercatchers are dear to me; they really got me started on this stained glass adventure. And it’s always nice to stop and look at the view.

I have had a lovely week actually, topped off by my run in the sun.

Had a lovely ‘working day’

at my kitchen table on Wednesday with my friend Susan and wee dog Alfie. We put the world to rights whilst quietly grafting. Susan sculpting, me foiling and Archie snuggling in front of the fire when there wasn’t any chance of ‘dropped’ biscuit crumbs. Susan was working on a new set of legs for her hand-sculpted doll. She reckons the first pair was too thin and too short. (I thought they looked perfect, but then again, I have fell runners legs that have been the envy of many a rugby player. They are none too thin and a bit short, so who am I to judge). Image

I was lucky and had sunshine for my ‘Open Studio’ last weekend too. Many thanks to all those who came and especially those who gave me some interesting commissions…. lots to get my teeth into in the coming weeks…….. Weka’s and Walshes! Watch this space.

And now these little ‘Ringed Plover’ are ready to fly to their new home. Looking perfectly at home during the photo-shoot on the shore and  attracting a bit of attention too, from the ‘Last of the summer wine’ group on the bench. “What is she up to?” they pondered over their butties……

Cocooned in my shed

Heaters on…..Radio 6 is playing great tunes ….. and it is snowing outside.

I am cocooned in warmth, sound, white and work!

I have had a great day. Worked through three D.J’s, gosh their shifts are short! And I have ‘ear worm’ courtesy of ‘The Villagers, Waiting for Nothing’. The tune so got in my head that I even put it up on youtube whilst I ate my lunch. (Thanks for that tip Susan!) Great song, tragic video. Check it out.

P1020074Anyway, what have I been busy on? With ‘Open Studio’ just one week away I was inspired to experiment with another glass applique subject. Lovebirds again, sleeping in perfect heart formation on a branch. Once it was set in silicone I put it aside to complete my latest Princess and the Pea. Soldering iron was switched on and bedposts and curlicues provided the finishing touch.

Soldering iron off, oh, and new DJ. (Playing….Supergrass and the great dance floor filler). Then it was barrier cream on for polishing and cleaning up of my curlews and dippers and a ‘ratch’ through my driftwood pile to find that perfect piece of wood.

ImageOut of my cocoon and into the draughty utility room, brrrrrrrrrrrrr.  With perfect pieces of wood found and set aside for tweaking and flattening it was time for the school run and to discover that the white had turned to wet. (Well apart from that skiddy bit in the car park – oops).

Nice day.Image

Love is in the air

Well, sorry it’s been a while since I posted and it is not that I have been idle it’s just that I haven’t felt the inspiration to write and share.

But, the Christmas holidays were ages ago and I am now back into the swing of things, pottering away. It can be a quiet time of year this but luckily I have some commissions to keep me busy. Check out my plovers and kingfishers in progress on the bench. These are now ready for final polishing and mounting on driftwood…. One of my favorite bits of the job as this is when they all display their individual character and uniqueness. Half have homes to go to and the other half will go into my ‘stock’.

Kingfishers and plovers ready for mounting

Seeking inspiration, I thought of my next ‘Open Studio’ date…..Friday 1st February.

Umm, cold and grey sprang to mind. But, with Valentine’s Day only just around the corner, I thought, “let’s make it ‘Love is in the Air’”.

Yep, you’ve guessed it; hearts and lovebirds will be featuring quite strongly. Here are a few taster images to get you in the mood…

Dripping hearts

Being an optimist I had pictured these little hearts dangling from my apple tree, in the sunshine with piercing winter blue skies beyond, but hey-ho, it’s flipping freezing and rather grey so the photo shoot took place in the comfort of my living room. Hope you like the soft romantic colour scheme that I am going for.

And take a look at my latest applique scene.  Nuzzling, little songbirds, all ‘loved-up’ on a berry-laden branch was the image I hoped to capture. I think it has a slightly Japanese feel and do you like the subtle heart shape of the piece. (Hey, when I’m on a theme – I embrace it!)

If you would like to see it finished then you shall have to come along to my next ‘Open Studio’.

Hare today…………………gone tomorrow

Oooh, I do like this latest commission.

Startled Hare

But tomorrow it goes to its new home.

Check out the base. As soon as I spotted that little tripod of a twig on the beach at St. Abbs I got excited. Coupled with the driftwood plank it forms the perfect natural support for the ‘Startled Hare.’ (Special thanks to my brother for helping me with this).

The piece is done using glass applique technique and measure approximately 450mm high x 300 mm wide, excluding base.

Ooooh, I’m going to miss it!

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…..

Window displayOr it was on Saturday for my first ‘Open Studio’. The frost was hard but the sun was shining……

The windows were dressed and the tables were laid. Gill's stockingsBunting and baubles sparkled on the tree and the stockings were hung very jauntily

I had got up early to ‘fly-poster’ the village and drop sugar lumps along Lindeth Road in the hopes of tempting some visiting reindeer my way. The reindeers didn’t come, but the visitors did…..

P1020038The house smelt delicious, homemade mulled wine and warmed mince pies…..Comments!

A great time was had by all. So good, we’re going to do it all again………..On Friday!

See you there for some Christmas Cheersparkly window

A little bird told me….

………and may have also told you, that I am to have an ‘Open Studio’ on Friday 7th December 2013. (This is part of my master plan, ‘Open Studio’, first Friday of every month, no hard sell, just get together with friends over tea and cake for stimulating dialogue.) I look forward to it and am busy sprucing up and baking as you read……..

and then a very wise bird said..

But then an even wiser bird told me, (it being Christmas coming and all), that it is all very well being sociable but don’t forget about putting bread on the table …… so perhaps open on a Saturday too!

So here we have it…

OPEN STUDIO

Saturday 1st December, 11am – 4pm AND

Friday 7th December 11am – 4pm.

And if the sun shines in between those times well I might just open in between times too. Just look out for the ‘A’ board at my gate which will look like this….

Even more exciting, there will be contributions from other friends as well. Painter, Chris Rigby has something up his sleeve that involves resin and beasties…. Intrigued? Me too, but if I told you anymore I would have to kill you. Gill Ferguson, textile artist, will be showing some tactile and beautiful wares. Painter, Susan Fletcher has promised to bring along some of her popular local Christmas cards (but she too may have a surprise up her sleeve). And finally, have I told you about my other famous neighbour, Lynn Whelon, author of ‘The Chicken Run’.  Well It’s her first novel and its fab. Full of drama, murder, brit’ humour, history, love and laughs and she will be there, with signed gift wrapped copies. What more could you ask for!

Ears ringing

“Ears ringing!” I thought they will be if I don’t go to hand bell practice on Tuesday night. My neighbour Jim, (Conductor, organiser and backbone of the ‘Silverdale bell ringers’) had coerced me into going along to their next practice session after I had made enquiries into the possibility of them performing as part of the 2013 Silverdale and Arnside Art and Craft Trail.

And so I found myself stood in the dark, outside a little wooden shed at the corner of the institute field, thinking, “I’ll give it 10 minutes…” …….And what happened next is a whole other story, but suffice to say I spent the next hour and more, transported to a magical festive land of chiming bells and synchronised tinkling harmony. At one point Jim passed me a bell. I think it was a ‘dumb-bell’ as it didnae’ chime for me. Oh dear, I felt I had failed a test. They need new members and that was partly why I went along. They’re a fantastic friendly group so if anyone out there is interested let me know and I can put you in touch with Jim.

But speaking of bells, I forgot I hadn’t shown you my latest commission.  ‘A wee house by the sea’ featuring St. John’s Church, Silverdale.

You may be interested to know that the pottery used is of old Victorian origin that I have ‘beach cleaned’ from Silverdale Shore. In times gone by the foreshore was used as a tip and bottle dump and slowly, as the tide shifts the shoreline, new treasure gets exposed. I have been lucky enough to find beautiful pieces of china and broken trifle dishes that make wonderful angel wings, (although these are a rare find now.) Another neighbour once found a horse’s head which I believe he still keeps in his wardrobe! And that would be another story again too……….

Abb Fab for a wedding

Just back from an ab’fab few days at St. Abbs. St. Abbs is a stunning little fishing village on the east caost of Scotland; a favourite haunt of ours when we lived up there. In a wee cottage on the cliffs above the harbour it was just blissful. Waking up and going to sleep to the sound of seagulls and then opening the curtains to a ‘wow’ view. Much pottering, crabbing and beachcombing was done and I came home with some lovely pieces of driftwood.

I cleared my bench before I went and managed to finish this cute wee bunting for a customer whose friends were getting wed. She wanted something personal to them and I think it hit the spot. It was great fun doing the lettering, I can see me doing a bit more of this……..’HOME’……….’LOVE’…………maybe…..’MERRY CHRISTMAS’….. Oooh, perhaps not!

The initial letters were made using copper foiling technique and amber glass. The curlicue floursihes weren’t just there for aesthetic reasons but also to add a bit of strength to a fragile design.

Great fun, I loved it!
